Physical Education is now one of the foundation subjects of the National Curriculum for both primary and secondary school children. The Effective Teaching of Physical Education brings together the findings of research as well as the experiences and opinions of teacher-trainee students, newly qualified teachers and experienced teachers to provide practical help and advice for new entrants to the profession in their quest to become effective teachers of physical education. The book begins by investigating why people decide on a career in the teaching of physical education, what are considered to be the characteristics of good physical education teachers, and what it is like to be a student or newly qualified teacher in the early stages of teaching. The remainder of the book concentrates on the teaching skills and professional competencies needed to become an effective teacher of physical education, and the reader is encouraged to use the evaluation exercises provided to reflect upon and appraise their teaching expertise. Aimed at students, newly qualified teachers and school mentors supporting trainees on school-based I.T.T. courses, it is designed to help new entrants to the profession reflect on what others have experienced and the findings of research to draw up their own personal professional development plan.
