Since the mid-1980s education in Britain has been in a process of continual change. As part of this process, teacher education in particular has been strongly affected with the proposed move to locate most professional teacher education in schools. This policy has distanced the course of teacher education in England and Wales from development in other European countries, a matter of concern at a time when there is a move towards a closer European union, with its implications for the mobility of labour. The authors provide an analysis of both the theoretical and proactical aspects of teacher education coupled with a critique of current policies, as well as offering a blueprint for the preparation of future teachers in the European Union.
