This volume is part of the "History of Religion" series and is not primarily a historical work but an authoritative account of the Roman Catholic Church as it existed in the late 1960s by John L. McKenzie, a prominent American Biblical scholar. Written from a standpoint both traditional and progressive, it takes full account of the then current movements in theology and liturgy and was as up to date as any work could be in a time of unparalleled change and upheaval. It is written with complete objectivity and with no attempt to conceal weaknesses and problems.
