August 1940, New York. Struggling and opportunistic writer Everett Gardner is given the chance to make a mark in the still infant comic book industry. All he has to do is create a hero. But creating a real hero turns out to be much more difficult than he expects. And while badgered by a desperate publisher and partnered with an uncooperative artist, the task might prove to be impossible. Especially with the distraction of the artist's intriguing young wife. But heroes can arise in the most unexpected places...
