When Caroline Bryce's body is fished out of the estuary, Detective Chief Superintendent Wycliffe is warned to walk very softly. The case is going to be a tricky one, as the Bryces are wealthy and Caroline's brother is the local MP. Wycliffe begins untangling the threads of Caroline's story and discovers a woman almost no-one liked and a few hated.
