Britain's moorland is characterised by a lack of trees, yet scientists say that most if not all of these areas were forested at some point since the last Ice Age. This remarkable study overturns the suggestion that climatic change was entirely responsible for the treeless landscape, and provides evidence that human societies were also implicated in the demise of Britain's forests.
