Visual stimuli which cause discomfort exist in a variety of everyday situations, from eye strain induced by VDU screens to garish carpets. Dr Wilkins has produced a unified theory of the mechanisms underlying visual discomfort, which has a number of applications including the treatment of epilepsy and the design of glasses.
