A temporary engagement was the perfect solution. When Riley came to Chicago to warn Deborah that her elderly aunt had hired a suave "investment counselor," and worse, was planning to invest the family trust fund in his scam, Deborah decided to announce her engagement. The terms of the trust provided funds from the principal for family weddings. A wedding, Deborah reasoned, would slow down Aunt Ida's investment plans.
