The Symposium on the Exploration of Halley's Comet held in Heidelberg in October 1986 brought together about 500 scientists who had participated in an unprecedented campaign: the joint investigation of Halley's Comet by six space vehicles and a worldwide network of ground-based observatories. This venture pushed back the limits of knowledge about comets, their origin, dynamics, composition and environment. Furthermore, the results of the exploration of Halley's Comet have deep implications for the present picture of the origin and evolution of the solar system.
