"The Pelourinho (pillory) is the heart of the largest historic district in Brazil. This neighborhood has the largest concentration of baroque churches and secular buildings in the New World. In the past, its elegant mansions and townhouses were home to the aristocracy of Bahia, and in the 18th century it served as an auction place for slaves. A large number of decayed buildings have been restored with historical accuracy and creative artisanry. Today the Pelourinho is a major cultural center.
