"Is there life after death? John Court, skeptical investigator of the paranormal, had his doubts about that. Then he dies in a catastrophic automobile accident and finds himself on the other side--alive, hyper-aware, and miraculously connected to his injured wife Claire. He's also connected to Rick Mendoza, the young veteran who caused his death, and whose blood has mingled with John's in Claire's bloodstream. Claire, who lost a hand in the accident, falls desperately sick. Three spirit-animals--Raven, Mallard, and Dog--warn John that his bitter resentment of Rick Mendoza is poisoning her. Groping to find his way, John follows Claire as she copes with tragic loss, and Rick as he struggles with rage and remorse. Their paths cross, collide, and finally meet at a wilderness estate guarded by a fierce proprietor. From there, John Court must find his way to a hidden world where lost souls writhe in anguish, awaiting rescue. Then, to the earthly place where Claire is once again trapped in catastrophe."--
