An account of Elihu Stewart's journey of thousands of miles on the Mackenzie and Yukon Rivers in the summer of 1906 to assess the timber resources of Canada's Northwest Territories province. The book includes Stewart's appreciation of the region's landscape and respect for its indigenous and mixed peoples, as well as observations of its natural resources and inhabitants. Stewart's journey was arduous, but led to initiatives for conservation programs and forest fire prevention across Canada.
