In April 2009, Amy Malcolm's husband - a reservist and helicopter pilot in the Canadian Forces - informs her that he has volunteered to serve in Afghanistan. Amy is torn between her anger that Ian didn't even consult her and her overwhelming fear that he will die. And in a series of heartfelt letters in which she struggles to make sense of Ian's decision and its consequences, a woman she has never met comes the most important person in her life.
