The Drowning House tells the story of Clare Porterfield, a photographer born and raised in Galveston, Texas, who returns to the island city for the first time after a personal tragedy. Searching for answers to questions about her difficult childhood, Clare also learns the truth about Stella Carraday, a young girl who—local legend says—drowned in her family’s grand house during the 1900 hurricane, hung by her long hair from the drawing room chandelier. Settled originally by pirates, Galveston has been home to illicit activity of all kinds ever since.
