Although she had been a successful and popular singer for some years, Suki was painfully aware that she had no background or family to support her, and she had perhaps got into the habit of sheltering too much, socially and professionally, behind her kindly manager Buddy and his wife. But then along came the bracing, sophisticated Joel Harlow, telling Suki she was grown up now and it was time she was pushed out of the nest. Was Joel, though, the right person to do it? Wouldn’t he only hurt her in the process?
