A skilled orator, lawer, and politican, Clay served as Secretary of State under John Quincy Adams and founded the Whig Party. "The Great Compromiser" brokered importat agreements on slavery during the lead up to the Civil War. As part of the "Great Triumvirate" with colleagues Daniel Webster and John C. Calhoun, he was instrumental in the Missouri Compromise of 1820, the Compromise Tariff of 1833, and the Compromise of 1850.
