The stranger in the shabby coat insisted that he knew her and that her name was Stella. This sinister encounter in a London street sets off a rain of baffling events for Sarah Alvis, which takes her from London to the South of France. It also introduces her to the famous artist Gerard Shellington, who rescues her from the persistent stranger and arranges for her to work for his aunt near Grasse so that he can have the opportunity of painting a portrait of Sarah. But Sarah has not seen the last of that stranger, and has far from heard the last of the girl whose uncanny resemblance to herself brings unhappiness and danger into her life.
