the long version
This portrayal of East Prussia captivates through a fascinating text and high-quality historical photos of the East Prussian people and places. It documents what German culture at its most eastern edge achieved in 700 years. Its loss is touched on only briefly. Readers unfamiliar with the area or history will appreciate the map found on the inside cover and, at the end of the book, a chronological outline from 1500 BC to 2002. Quotes from the poets of East Prussia, and some of it in dialect, speak directly to the reader with German language knowledge. The major part of the story is entitled "Land of the dark forests and crystal lakes." This is followed by an ode to Konigsburg, the immortal, and a final tribute to the edge of the edge, Memelland of Annchen von Tharau. The question of the author - who were the East Prussians - is answered.
