the long version
"This book, based on a set of numismatic materials as complete as possible, brings a major contribution to the history of the Northern Phoenicia cities on which, traditionally, sources are scarce. From its autonomy by 81/80 b.c. to the foundation of a Roman colony in Berytos/Beirut in 15 b.c. and to the relations Berytos developed with the colony of Heliopolis/Baalbek, coinage study has always been closely linked to the context of events in those two cities. Similarly, coin issuing in other cities such as Orthosia/Ard Artousi, Caesarea of Lebanon/'Arqa, Tripolis, Botrys/Batrun, Byblos, Sidon, Tyr and Chalcis of Lebanon, is studied in the same context. The analysis of these coins allows the author to bring to light the specific characteristics of each city and to provide us with new information on several controversial points in the history of Hellenistic and Roman Phoenicia. While the pace of coin issuing gives evidence of the Roman Berytos economic dynamism, the denominations of the monetary system are also a testimony of the continuity with the pre-colonial period. The coinage in the Heliopolis colony starts with Septimius Severus in 194 and halts definitely around 256/257. The author's coinage study confirms the thesis according to which Heliopolis belonged to Berytos until 194"--Publisher's website.
