Inspector Schmidt and his alter ego, George Bagby, found their newest case at a gas station when the glamorous, blond, and often-married Mrs. Portland drove in to complain that something was wrong with her auto horn. Six dynamite sticks wired to the horn explained the immediate difficulty. But when the woman's wealthy octogenarian husband followed her previous husbands to an untimely death, there was suddenly a lot more that needed explanation. And, like all three-time losers, a lot of people were determined there would be no final answers. What Inspector Schmidt and George had to find out was which three-time loser was most dead set against being a four-time loser.
