Anvil Lodge, a retirement home in The Chilterns, is run by the seemingly formidable Daphne Currer-Spriggs. Those who choose Anvil Lodge are fortunate. Their home is luxurious, with a sometimes eccentric staff, and friendship abounds. The effective king-pin of the establishment is the self-effacing but single-minded Major Llenots-Jones, who refers to his hostess as the C.O. His fellow residents are a group of characters whose experiences, and involvements with his activities, form the substance of this unusual and entertaining novel.
