Elaine hadn't wanted to go back to France, where less than a year ago her marriage had crashed so disastrously; she didn't want to be continually in the company of her husband Yvan; least of all did she want to see Solange Bourget, the girl Yvan had blatantly preferred to her. But her uncle Armand was ill, probably dying, and she couldn't be so heartless as to refuse to go back and see him, so really she had no choice.
