the long version
This volume is the result of a workshop organized in Istanbul in April 2002 by the Marmara University Research Center for International Relations (MURCIR) and the Swedish National Institute for Working Life (NIWL). The title “Migration and Labour Markets in a European Perspective: Turkish and Swedish Experiences" provided a common point of departure, rather than a limiting framework. The articles discuss a wide range of issues and perspectives related to migration, labour market and working life in the present and future Europe. They deal with seemingly disparate but interrelated topics such as politics, legislation, demographics, family life and youth culture. The contributors come from different backgrounds - politics, academia, administration and international organisations. This reflects the complexity of migration and labour market issues. It also illustrates the necessity of an interdisciplinary approach to deal with one of Europe's greatest challenges – to reconcile the needs of an ageing population with the aspirations of new and old immigrants, without fuelling emerging populist movements.
