The heroine has spent most of her life on a small tropical island with her father, the areas doctor. She is also a doctor. NATO personnel come to the island to survey it as a new airstrip and fuel depot. She and the Islanders strongly object as it will destroy their way of life and eliminate their livelihood based on fishing and growing coconuts. However she is strongly attracted to the Major in charge of the surveying unit.
