Because the linings of the airways leading into the lungs produce secretions that are coughed up as sputum, and because lung cancers can develop in these airways tissues, the sputum that forms near the growth will often contain cancer cells. With the proper training and reference images, physicians can now diagnose lung cancer by collecting and examining that sputum under a microscope using sputum cytology.
