Here we have a collection of interconnected stories that form the dramatic saga of Burnt Creek, a small crossroads town in central Oregon, populated by daring homesteaders. The book begins with one of these brave pioneers, Dave Budd, as his wayward son, wanted for murder, returns after five years away one snowy Christmas Eve to seek shelter from the law, only to turn on his father, taking all his food and money, when the sheriff comes knocking. As the story continues, we follow the lives, actions and passions of Budd - merchant, postmaster and locator for the town - and the other citizens of Burnt Creek as they go about their business; everyday people in everyday situations. This is the West as it really was, filled with people as they really were, presented by a true master.
