the long version
A combination of murder mystery, romance and melodrama, in which a man falls off a boat crossing the English Channel during a storm is found a half-hour later, seemingly dropped through a skylight in an artist's studio in London. While the "great detective" Warlock-Jones investigates the case, a romance blooms between the murder victim's widow and the painter. In the end, Warlock-Jones fails to solve the mystery and the widow and the murderer commit suicide (leaving behind letters explaining how it all happened). The painter prays to God to forgive them and reunites with his fiancee.
