As different research projects on the success of Gaelic medium education (GME) pupils have shown, the system works very well as far as academic aims are concerned. However, while GME is successful on an educational level, it is surprising that, independent of their skill levels, most pupils do not seem to make any use of their Gaelic abilities outside school. In this book, Dr Sìleas L. NicLeòid takes a closer look at GME pupils’ own ideas and understanding of Gaelic and of Gaelic Medium Education, at their feelings about their learning situation, their abilities in the language and at the role Gaelic has in their lives. The book maintains a strong focus on the children's voice, based on interviews with 80 pupils from all over Scotland, between P4 at Primary School level and S2 at High School level. By bringing the children’s own ideas together with adults’ ideas, conclusions and recommendations are arrived at that are of great importance for improving GME in the future.
