The painted garden

This is a children's novel about an English family who travel to California. It focuses on the cross-grained Jane, whose personality alone lands her the role of Mary in a film version of *The Secret Garden* by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Colin is played by a famous child actor, and Dickon by a boy who has an amazing gift with animals. A great deal of the book is concerned with the making of the film.
