Counseling American Indians

Six essays pertain mainly to substance abuse and its treatment in four Native American populations: the Cherokee, Sioux, Navajo, and Mestizo. Contributors provide some information on the history and culture of these nations, as well as on the history of treatment in Native populations. Topics include fetal alcoholism; bibliotherapy for traumatized children and youth; the UNITY Regional Youth Treatment Center at Cherokee; American Indian spirituality and counseling; clinical and educational programs for Navajo children and youth; and Mestizo traditional remedios.
