This book attempts to comprehensively cover the life and academic activity of the first Ukrainian (in the true sense of the word) art researcher Hryhoriy Pavlutsky (1861–1924), Doctor of Arts, Honored Professor of History and Philology Department of the Imperial University of Saint Volodymyr. It is revealed how Prof. Pavlutsky, as a scientist and a teacher, gained undeniable supremacy in the Russian Empire in the following fields: applying a comparative method into art studies; teaching the world art past the Greek and Roman era at the university level; laying the theoretical and historical basis of Ukrainian artifact studies; introducing the term Ukrainian Baroque; comprehensive study of the Ukrainian ornaments’ history.
