"First published in 1995, Gypsies under the Swastika was the first book to bring the story of the Nazi persecution of the Gypsies to a general readership. More than that, it sets the events of the twentieth century within the context of centuries of harassment and mistreatment of Gypsies born of deep-rooted prejudice in European society." After the final liberation in 1945, Gypsy survivors did not commit their stories to paper but, in most cases, tried to forget the horrors they had experienced.
