the long version
It is 1946. The war is over, but England is still a dark and gloomy place. Rationing is in force, no one has any money, and there are no servants. The Granvilles' magnificent Mayfair house is a bomb-site. Nevertheless, ambitious Liza Granville is determined that her younger daughters, Amanda and Charlotte, should come out in style, just as their sisters did. She cannot accept that the world has changed, that life for England's upper-classes will never be the same again. As the various members of the Granville family struggle to come to terms with their changed circumstances, family loyalties are strained and sibling relationships tested. When Henry Granville dies suddenly, leaving the beloved family home, Hartley Hall, to Liza, her casual disregard for his legacy almost threatens to destroy them.
