Animal astronauts

This book tells the story of the contributions made by animals to space research. In this research, as in virtually all biomedical research, laboratory animals have played an essential role. That role was dramatized in recent years when chimpanzees trained in Air Force Laboratories were placed in sub-orbital and orbital flights. As research continues toward the technology of extended manned space flight, research animals will still be needed to prepare the way for man. The full story of the contributions made by animals to space research has never been told before. Major Coleman and Major Bergwin, who know the scope and extent of Air Force research and development efforts, are particularly well qualified to tell this story.
