Welkin's Rift by Liam O'Leary. There was no apparent connection between the Fuel Research Centre's study of the freak power source and the awesome happenings in other parts of the world. Five hundred mile per hour winds, localised gravity that plucked planes from the sky, the emergence of inimical sea creatures with arms and hands were warnings that Man ignored in his lust to exploit the new energy source. Then the Fuel Research Team suffered their own catastrophe, but aided by a Special Branch Officer, an American philologist and a specialist in animal psychology they ignored the search for power and discovered the truth.
