This is the rather unique saga of Mary, the beautiful mulatto woman, who has been led to believe that because of her mixed blood, fair complexion and straight hair she has an advantage over "dem Afreecans" of less stature. Then, after master beats her to within an inch of her life, threatens to sell her unborn child and sells her fiancee on their wedding day, Mary begins to see some merit in what the field hands have to say and begins plotting her getaway.
