As Britain recovers from WWII, Annie Royal is looking to the future. Recently married to Henry, and with a baby on the way, she and her husband are happily settled in the seaside town of Worthing. But a knock at the door brings Annie's world crashing down. On her doorstep stands Sarah and her two young children. Sarah reveals that she is Henry's wife and has been searching for him for over a year. Annie is forced to accept the truth when Henry is arrested for bigamy. In her darkest hour, with the baby imminent, Annie finds support in the most unlikely places.
