The new Japanese architecture

If any one country can be called representative of today's movements and directions in architectural design, it is Japan, because few other countries have made such significant contributions to the field. The innovative, exacting, and challenging designs that have come from Japan's leading architects in the last decade continue to inform and influence the development of architecture in its many facets throughout the world. The New Japanese Architecture takes a wide-ranging look at contemporary Japanese architects and firms who are on the cutting-edge of design: architects like Hiromi Fujii, Arata Isozaki, Fumihiko Maki, Tadao Ando, Kazuo Shinohara, and Kisho Kirokawa, along with many others who are creating significant work. Each architect is presented individually with a well-illustrated selection of the architect's most significant work. The principal essay by Botond Bognar is accompanied by shorter essays by Hajime Yatsuka and Lynne Breslin analyzing particular trends and developments, and looking at specific architects' The New Japanese Architecture and The New French Architecture initiate Rizzoli's new series on current international developments in the field of architectural design. Other volumes planned for the series include those on Germany, Finland, England, Italy, and Mexico.
