the long version

The training of classical musicians in the past 150 years has omitted training in improvisation, although all players received such training historically before that time. Jazz is wonderful, but it's not for every player or instrument. This book gives classical players the means to learn to create their own music, find their own voice, without having to play jazz; they can begin right away with what they know now - any instrument, any level. There is ample explanatory material how to begin, plus resource lists for further study. The 564 games (categorized into nearly three dozen general areas: melody, rhythm, harmony, timbre, etc.) will supply inspiration and ideas for any musician for a long time. The book arose from a semester course entitled "Improvisation for Classical Musicians" and could be used by any music teacher to give a similar course.
