the long version
Synopsis from backcover: Rose is a twenty-two year old U.S Army nurse whose youthful idealism and innocence has been shattered while following the Allied invasion from the shores of Dover into France. She struggles with each fiber of her being to survive the horrors of the final six months of WWII with her dear friend Grace by her side. The arrival of Albert, a wounded French Resistance fighter at her hospital in Dijon stirs her heart, an emotion she lacks the skills to deal with. The devastation of the war-torn theatre threatens to rip them apart before their lives together can even begin. In spite of their mutual efforts, the decision falls to the cruelty of war. In the ensuing swirl of mental confusion, Rose nears her emotional precipice. Rose and Albert go through the motions of life when the impossible occurs. Rose discovers with much ambivalence had it not been for a devastating secret, their separation was unnecessary. The question remains whether or not they will be granted a reprieve, and if so, for how long.
