A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of M.Sc at the University of Toronto- January 1971. Abstract: A thorough survey is made of the problems inherent in the synchronization of Parallel processes in computer systems. Use is made of the Petri nets to develop a method which affords systematic descriptions of multi-process environments. A variety of synchronization methods is presented as is the application of each such method in solving a typical resource allocation problem in a multi-process environment. A simulation of a solution to the problem is made in the PL/I language.
