It's 1820 in South Yorkshire, and Patricia Pickering is wealthy, but lonely. A young widow and inheritor of the Pickering Mill, she is also joint owner of the Flint mill with her cousin, Robert. Meanwhile, Lord Percy Alexander of Wakefield Hall, is responsible for its debts and the welfare of his two younger siblings. Though Robert has proposed marriage to Patricia, to benefit the running of both the mills, she finds that it's Lord Percy who's on her mind - after he'd nearly knocked her over!
