Claire has fallen in love with a dashing Major (Robert West) and him with her. Claire has also caught the eye of a wealthy Earl, Nicholas Shea, and he seeks her hand. Her family needs the marriage settlement and the Earl tells Claire he is not looking for any affection so she reluctantly accepts his proposal. When the Earl catches Claire on an assignation to say good-bye to her Major their marriage begins on shaky ground.
