the long version

Berlin was always with them, a city destroyed and divided by war. As Charles Beevor teaches Elizabeth Bowman to fly his Gypsy Moth, their passion for flying leads them to war. Charles flies a bomber, part of the enormous effort to crush Germany's will by destroying its cities. Elizabeth is a ferry pilot, the most delightful job that she can imagine, but when her engineer and best friend, Alice, is killed on their last trip, Elizabeth is devastated. She finds it hard to adapt to the mundane life to which she returns, but eventually finds peace amongst the families in East London, struggling to rebuild their own lives after the war. It's only when Charles comes to find her that their friendship is rekindled and their love affair takes flight.
