The Back to Basics series was aimed at students at every level of experience. We tried to be thorough, systematic, exhaustive, scientifically correct -- and even interesting. For the most part, we think we succeeded, and that is why we have gathered the series (with some supplementary articles of similar format to fill out the occasional blanks) into a book. The knowledge that it contains is the best that a group of specialists in flying and in writing about flying have had to offer; it may amuse, it may instruct, it may occasionally save lives. - Foreword.
