the long version
This book establishes the structure of pop narrative by relating literature to film, media and the other arts in the 60’s, the 70’s, and the 80’s. The author investigates the origins of pop literature, its presence in the modern artistic movements, and the phenomenon of democratization of the arts in the 20th century. He explores Bakhtin’s “carnivalization” of language and various language techniques, borrowed from other types of discourse, by focusing on the characteristic themes of modern times: chaos and waste, violence and partying, the body and eroticism, and the kitsch. The characters of this literary typology are examined through a confrontation with the urban myths, created both by mass media and the culture industry. In addition, the author explores the relationship between text and context in Brazilian literature during the military dictatorship, as well as the function of literature in post-industrial society.
