Her novels contained religious themes, reflecting her Victorian values, the best-known of which was "Robert Elsmere." Three of her books were written about WWI at the behest of Theodore Roosevelt. In addition to her writing, she was involved in the anti-suffrage league, fighting against women getting the vote. She also worked to improve the education of the poor.
