Old Jasper Bowen was a miserly hermit until the arrival of his orphaned niece Eleanor and then his nephew Charles, thought to have been lost in the war. Charles' arrival seems to sour Eleanor in the old man's favor, but everyone is surprised when Jasper rises from his death bed, makes a will, and leaves for a health spa with a pocket full of cash. The subsequent discovery of his body in the ashes of a wilderness cabin deepens the mystery, but Eleanor has other worries, as the new will disinherits her and throws her into the street unless she accepts the advances of her dashing cousin.
