Birch Charlevoix stumbles into the Baggattaway Moon tournament on a bum ankle, with a ragtag team, a prison sentence hanging over his head, separated from his wife, suspended from his job, grief-stricken by the loss of two beloved figures in his life, half afraid of one of his own players--an aloof but graceful athlete named Pascal LeFebvre--and hoping for three unlikely wins in the tournament, three real yet symbolic victories that might provide a balm for the lingering spiritual ache of every Native American.
