Tensions in the Mediterranean area have survived the end of the cold war and have if anything grown in seriousness. The balance of power in the Persian Gulf and the security of Israel remain immensely important to the United States. Europe for its part is mesmerized by the prospect of the establishment of culturally and possibly politically hostile regimes on the south side of the Mediterranean.
